Millions of years ago, hot volcanic lava cooled down and left open gas pockets inside the rock. Liquid iron oxide (hematite) seeped into those pockets first, growing into those feathery, bright red plume structures. Right after that, a rush of liquid quartz (chalcedony) flooded the rest of the cavity, instantly trapping the iron plumes in place. The cool fortification lines right down the center mark the very last spots where the liquid silica cooled and sealed the pocket shut.
